The idea behind Biking4Education
Biking4Education is a group of Austrian mountain bikers supporting the UNICEF project "Schools for Africa". Since 2004 this Nelson Mandela project has already built or restored 500 schools, trained 24.000 teachers and created adequate conditions to guarantee graduation for more than half a million children. In Austria Empress Maria Theresia has laid the foundation stone for general education back in 1774! In many regions of Africa education is still a far too expensive luxury.
For us, "Schools for Africa" is one of the "most honest" kinds of development aid which strikes at the root of the problems and does not require any counter trades or unfair requirements. Many generations will get the opportunity to acquire knowledge and to pass it on to the next generations. Without reading and writing you cannot build up a state. In the scope of this project the inhabitants learn how to help themselves on their own and thus can get out of the vicious circle of poverty, hunger, dependence and violence.
As "ambassadors" of this project, the members of Biking4Education will compete in the Cape Epic, one of the toughest mountainbike races of the world. In cooperation with sponsors from economy and arts, but also by means of private donations, their goal is to finance 1-2 schools for the UNICEF.
